Lighting Control (Dynalite / DALI)
To achieve precise lighting levels and desired ambiance, we collaborated with the clients’ lighting designers. Recognising the benefits of advanced lighting control, the client embraced our vision. We implemented a comprehensive DALI lighting system using Dynalite architecture and control devices. DALI was selected for its smooth, flicker-free dimming and energy efficiency. The system creates a warm, inviting environment, fulfilling the client’s desire for a space conducive to family and social gatherings. The result is a truly remarkable lighting experience.
Shade Control
Automated shade control was implemented using Dynalite shade controllers, providing privacy, energy efficiency, and aesthetic enhancements. Integrated into the Dynalite system, pre-programmed schedules enable temperature and privacy management, offering tailored control over natural light and ventilation.
Control4 Automation System
The Control4 automation system serves as the central hub for all smart home functionalities, offering seamless integration and control of all devices. This unified platform provides customisation, energy efficiency, enhanced security, and simplified management, enhancing the overall smart home experience.
Distributed Audio
A comprehensive distributed audio system, managed by a Pulse-Eight Digital Audio matrix, delivers high-fidelity sound throughout the home. The matrix accepts inputs from various sources, controlling switching and volume for all outputs. Powered amplifiers and speakers deliver the audio to each zone. The matrix’s 16-band equaliser and input gain control ensure balanced audio across all zones. Blustream digital audio over CAT extenders extract audio directly from TVs, feeding it back to the matrix. This centralized system allows for seamless audio zone integration, eliminating delays and enabling independent or synchronised volume control.
Distributed Video
The video distribution system was designed to provide a flexible and high-quality viewing experience throughout the home. To achieve this, we implemented a full Binary MoIP (Media over IP) system, utilising an Araknis managed network switch as the backbone for video signal transmission. This IP-based approach offers several advantages over traditional HDMI matrix switchers. Video signals are encoded and transmitted over the network via the Araknis switch to Binary MoIP decoders located at each display. This configuration ensures seamless and high-fidelity video distribution throughout the residence.
Electrical
As part of our turnkey solution, we managed all electrical aspects, ensuring seamless integration and providing the client with a single point of contact. This comprehensive approach ensures control and peace of mind. We designed and implemented a 200A 3-phase electrical solution across the sprawling 4,000m²+ 2-level home. Utilising 95mm XLPE mains cabling, we ensured efficient power distribution on the long run from the street to the main switchboard in the services room. More sub-boards on the first floor and in the boat house further optimised power distribution, minimising voltage drop and ensuring consistent performance.
In addition to the above we also designed and installed a backup system incorporating a diesel generator and Tesla battery system to ensure essential services remain on at all times.
HVAC Control
Given the Gold Coast’s climate and the home’s expansive design, precise temperature control was essential. A Cool Master solution was implemented to overlay the Daikin HVAC system, providing stylish and reliable climate management. The Cool Master system integrates with the Control4, offering a user-friendly interface for intuitive control.
Network
Achieving reliable Wi-Fi coverage in this residence presented a significant challenge due to its sheer size and steel / concrete construction, which inherently obstructs wireless signals. We implemented an Araknis network architecture, chosen for its robust performance and exceptional value. Leveraging Araknis’s central management through OVRC integration streamlined control, programming, and troubleshooting, offering both powerful functionality and user-friendly operation, whether accessed locally or remotely. To ensure seamless wireless coverage, a comprehensive site survey and scan were conducted, optimising access point placement. Detailed documentation and reports are available for review.
Intercom
The intercom system serves as the initial point of interaction with the home, extending far beyond a traditional doorbell. Our solution incorporates multiple 2N / Control IP Door stations, providing crystal-clear video verification of visitors before granting access. This enhances security, facilitates convenient communication, and ensures privacy. The integrated access keypads and IP connectivity enable remote management and global control.

Security Alarm:
Security was of utmost importance to the client, particularly given their young family and high-profile lifestyle. We implemented a multi-layered hybrid security system, collaborating closely with their trusted security provider. This robust solution encompassed PIR sensors, touchscreen keypads, smoke alarm integration, access control, motor control, wireless key fobs, and seamless integration with the Control4 platform. This comprehensive approach provides the client with unparalleled peace of mind and effortless control.
Access Control
Keyless entry was a fundamental requirement for the property. To achieve this, we deployed an access control system at three key entrances, partnering with the client’s established security provider. This system provides a secure and convenient means of entry for the clients, their family, and approved tradespeople. Unique access codes and customisable schedules were implemented to provide precise control and enhance security.
Video Surveillance
To ensure seamless integration we collaborated closely with the client’s trusted security provider to implement a sophisticated Hikvision CCTV system. This system features ColourVu technology for 24/7 full-colour imagery, crucial for clients who travel frequently. Further enhancing security, a TandemVu PTZ camera with dual lenses was integrated. A wide-angle lens provides continuous overview while a PTZ lens automatically zooms in on activity detected by the overview lens, capturing detailed footage for analysis.

The client’s primary objective was to seamlessly integrate a sophisticated technology solution within a space defined by the architect’s distinct, provincial design aesthetic. This presented a unique challenge. The architectural vision was characterised by intricate detailing across every surface, demanding an exceptionally discreet and innovative approach to Lighting, immersive audio and other technological integrations. We couldn’t simply install standard solutions; we had to “think outside the box” to achieve a harmonious blend of form and function.

The client was adamant that audio quality should not be compromised. They desired a rich, clear sound experience that enhanced the atmosphere without visually dominating the space and multiple surround sound audio zones. Our task was to deliver a technology design that was both subtly integrated and capable of producing high-fidelity audio and that also appeared to emanate naturally from the environment.
Ultimately, the goal was to create a technological infrastructure that enhanced the client’s experience of the space without detracting from its architectural beauty. By prioritising both aesthetic integration and audio performance, we aimed to deliver a solution that both met and exceeded the client’s expectations.

How we meet the Brief
This project integrated sophisticated technology into a home with a distinct provincial architectural style, prioritising both aesthetic harmony and high-performance functionality. The DALI lighting system, distributed audio and video distribution were meticulously implemented to deliver immersive experiences without visually disrupting the intricate detailing of the space. Centralised control via Control4, along with integrated shades, schedules and HVAC management, further enhanced convenience while maintaining a clean, uncluttered environment.
By employing discreet solutions like in-wall/ceiling speakers/sub woofers, hidden wiring, and a robust yet concealed network infrastructure, the project ensured that technology seamlessly blended with the architectural design. The focus on high-fidelity audio, seamless video distribution, and comprehensive automation, coupled with a robust electrical and backup system, resulted in a technologically advanced home that enhanced the client’s living experience without compromising the intended architectural vision. Security was also addressed with integrated solutions, ensuring peace of mind for the client and their family, while remaining as unobtrusive as possible.

With a project of this calibre came its fair share of interesting hurdles! Dealing with those kinds of challenges is where our team really shines.
Navigating Long Cable Runs:
To effectively manage the challenge of extremely long cable runs, our team initiated with a comprehensive site survey to optimize pathways and pre-emptively identify potential issues. Subsequently, we strategically located load centres for both the Dynalite and electrical systems, meticulously calculating their placement based on cable specifications and anticipated loads to guarantee signal integrity. Complementing this, we utilized high-quality, low-loss cables designed for extended distances to mitigate signal degradation. Finally, rigorous post-installation testing, including signal strength measurements, allowed us to identify and rectify any remaining issues, ensuring reliable system performance.
Excessive Loads: (Dynalite Address Exhaustion)
To overcome the Dynalite address limitations posed by the extensive loads, our strategy combined intelligent design and advanced architecture through strategic network segmentation using multiple processors and bridges to expand addressable space. We further optimized address usage by employing group addressing and scene control where individual addressing was not essential, and by implementing DALI subnets for compatible fixtures to offload addresses from the Dynalite network. Finally, meticulous load allocation across Dynalite universes ensured a balanced distribution and prevented system overload.
Voltage Drop on Dynalite and Power Circuits:
To proactively combat potential voltage, drop issues, we conducted detailed load calculations considering cable lengths and device power requirements, followed by the specification of appropriately sized cables to minimize resistive losses. Strategic placement of power supplies closer to their loads and ensuring well-distributed power injection points within the Dynalite network further mitigated voltage drop. Finally, thorough voltage drop testing under maximum load conditions during commissioning allowed us to verify circuit integrity and make necessary adjustments to cable sizes or power supply locations.
Respecting the Firm Aesthetic Vision:
Maintaining the client’s and designers’ aesthetic vision as paramount, our approach involved early and frequent collaboration to fully grasp their requirements for lighting, interfaces, and ambiance. We prioritized the discreet integration of technology by concealing wiring and modules to preserve visual appeal, and explored custom solutions for elements like control panels or fixture mounting when necessary, working closely with suppliers. To ensure alignment and address any ambiguity, we provided thorough mock-ups and demonstrations of lighting effects and control interfaces before final installation.
By proactively addressing each of these challenges with a combination of technical expertise, meticulous planning, clear communication, and a strong focus on the client’s vision, our team was able to navigate these complexities and deliver a successful project that met all the desired goals.
